I Have an Invention Idea — Now What? Your First 30 Days
You're driving, or in the shower, or watching someone struggle with a bad product — and the idea hits. It's good. You can see it. You might even be right.
Then comes the paralysis. Do you need a patent? A lawyer? An engineer? Fifty thousand dollars? Most invention ideas don't die because they were bad — they die in the first month, from some mix of overwhelm, bad advice, and the quiet fear that someone will steal it.
This is the anti-paralysis plan: exactly what to do in your first 30 days, week by week, with real budgets. Total cost if you follow it: $0–500. Not a typo — the first month is about thinking and validating, not spending.
Week 1 (Days 1–7): Document and protect — quietly
Goal: Establish your record, and don't blow up your own patent rights.
- •Day 1–2: Write it down, with dates. Open a notebook (or a dated email thread to yourself) and record: what the invention is, what problem it solves, how it works, and rough sketches. Ugly sketches are fine. Dated documentation establishes your invention timeline — cheap insurance that takes an hour.
- •Day 3–5: Sketch the details. Push past the concept into specifics. How do the parts connect? What's it made of? What does using it feel like, step by step? You'll hit questions you can't answer — write those down too. That list becomes your prototyping agenda later.
- •Day 6–7: Zip it. Here's the counterintuitive part: don't post it, don't crowdfund it, don't demo it publicly. Public disclosure starts a 12-month legal clock on your US patent rights and kills most foreign rights immediately. Private conversations are fine. Social media is not.
And one hard rule for the whole month: do not pay anyone who contacted you first, and do not pay $500+ for an "invention evaluation." Companies selling evaluations, submission packages, and marketing kits to first-time inventors are legally required to disclose their results — and those disclosures consistently show fewer than 1% of customers ever profit. Week 2 (Days 8–14): Find out if anyone wants it

Goal: Ten real conversations and an honest competitive picture.
Days 8–11: Talk to ten potential customers. Not friends being nice — people who actually have the problem your invention solves. Describe the problem first, not your solution: "How do you deal with X today? What's annoying about it? What have you tried?" Then float the concept and watch their face. You're listening for two things: does the problem genuinely bother them, and would they pay to fix it. Ten conversations will teach you more than ten weeks of solo thinking. (You can do this without revealing patentable details — describe what it does, not how.)
Days 12–13: Search like a skeptic. Spend two evenings trying to prove your idea already exists:
- •Amazon: search every phrase a customer would use. Read 1-star reviews of the closest products — those complaints are your feature list.
- •Google Patents (free): search key terms. Finding similar patents isn't fatal — it tells you what's already claimed so you can identify what's different about yours.
- •Kickstarter/Indiegogo: has someone launched this? What happened? A failed campaign for a similar idea is data, not doom — figure out why it failed.
Day 14: The honest checkpoint. If ten people shrugged and Amazon already sells it for $12, it's okay to stop here. Killing an idea in week 2 for free is a win — most people pay $15,000 to learn the same thing in year two. If the problem is real and your angle is different: continue.
Week 2 budget: $0 (coffee for interviewees, maybe).
Week 3 (Days 15–21): Run the numbers before the numbers run you
Goal: A back-of-napkin business case and a path decision.
Days 15–17: Rough out the money. Three numbers, estimated honestly:
- What would it sell for? Anchor to the closest existing products.
- What might it cost to make? At this stage, a crude rule: if comparable products retail near your target price, manufacturers are typically landing them at 20–30% of retail. A $40 product probably needs to be built for $8–12. You'll refine this later with real engineering.
- What does the journey cost? Full idea-to-market for a physical product typically runs $25,000–225,000 over 9–24 months depending on complexity — design ($3,000–25,000), prototyping ($5,000–50,000 across iterations), then manufacturing setup ($15,000–150,000+). First-timers underestimate by 3–5x, so if your gut said "maybe ten grand and six months," recalibrate now, not in month eight.
That range sounds scary in week 3. It shouldn't stop you — it should sequence you. You don't need $100,000 to start. You need a few hundred dollars to take the next step, and each stage earns the decision about the next one.
Days 18–21: Pick your path. With real numbers in hand, decide which road fits: license the idea to an existing company, or build it yourself. They have wildly different economics — licensing typically pays 3–5% of wholesale while building keeps the full margin but carries the capital risk. Week 4 (Days 22–30): Make something physical
Goal: The crudest possible prototype, and professional quotes if it survives.
Days 22–25: Build the ugly version. Cardboard, foam board, clay, duct tape, a $20 haul from the hardware store, or a public-library 3D printer. It doesn't need to work well — it needs to exist. A physical object answers questions sketches can't: is it too big, does the grip make sense, does the mechanism bind. This is your proof-of-concept, version zero. Professional POC prototypes run $100–2,000; your cardboard version costs a weekend and points the professional round at the right questions.
Days 26–28: Write the one-pager. A single page: the problem, how the invention solves it, key requirements (size, materials, target retail price, must-have functions), photos of your crude prototype, and your open questions from Week 1. This document is what separates a productive first conversation with an engineering firm from an expensive vague one.
Days 29–30: Get 2–3 real quotes. Send the one-pager to two or three product development firms and ask what a proof-of-concept or first engineering pass would cost. Legitimate firms will sign your NDA, ask detailed questions before quoting, and give you ranges with reasoning. Comparing three of them is the fastest education in product development you can get.
Week 4 budget: $0–500 depending on how fancy your ugly prototype gets.
Day 30: The decision
You now have what 95% of idea-havers never get: documentation, ten customer data points, a competitive map, honest cost expectations, a physical object, and professional quotes. Three legitimate outcomes:
- •Proceed: the problem is real, your angle is different, the math can work. Fund the first professional stage.
- •Park: promising but the timing or capital isn't there. Your dated documentation keeps the option open.
- •Kill: the market said no. You spent under $500 to learn it. That's the cheapest tuition in this industry.
All three are wins. The only losing move is the fourth one — staying frozen at Day 0 for another year while someone else ships it.
The five mistakes that wreck month one
- Filing a utility patent immediately. $5,000–15,000 protecting a design that prototyping will change. If you need early protection, a provisional runs $1,500–3,000 — and usually even that can wait a round or two. Full breakdown of patent timing here.
- Paying an invention promotion company. Flat fees, glossy packages, sub-1% success rates in their own disclosures.
- Going public too early. The crowdfunding teaser you post in week 2 starts a legal clock you didn't mean to start.
- Ordering inventory. No thousand-unit orders in month one. Or month six.
- Quitting your job. The plan above costs $0–500 and runs on evenings. Keep the paycheck through prototyping.

Should I get a patent before doing anything else?
Usually no. Prototype first (privately, under NDA when working with others), then file a provisional once the design stabilizes. The exceptions — trivially copyable ideas, imminent public launches, licensing pitches — are covered in our patent-vs-prototype timing guide.
How much money do I need to start?
$0–500 covers the entire first month: validation, research, and a crude prototype. The first professional stage (proof-of-concept engineering) typically runs $100–2,000. The full journey to market is $25,000–225,000 — but it's staged, and each stage is a separate go/no-go decision.
Should I tell people about my idea?
Private conversations, yes — you can't validate in a vacuum, and describing what it does (not how it works) protects the patentable core. Public posts, crowdfunding pages, and demos, no — not until you've filed at least a provisional application.
How do I know if my idea is good?
Ten honest customer conversations plus a skeptical Amazon/Google Patents/Kickstarter search. If the problem makes people visibly frustrated and nothing on the market nails your angle, that's as good a signal as month one can give you.
What if my idea already exists?
Look closer before quitting. Does the existing product have furious 1-star reviews? Is it solving 80% of the problem badly? Most successful products weren't first — they were better. If it exists and customers love it, though, believe them.
What's a realistic timeline from idea to selling?
9–24 months for most physical products: weeks for validation, 4–12 weeks for design, 3–12 months of prototype iterations, 8–16 weeks for a first production run. Anyone promising you retail shelves in 90 days is selling something — and it isn't your product.
